Hidden Franchise Construction Costs

The build-out construction process is often the most challenging component of any franchise startup. Blending design decisions, city review, landlord issues and financial concerns, the project culminates with the added stress of final details before the doors open for the franchise. Often if business owners had a mulligan, they would go back and rethink the actual costs in building out the demised space. Hidden franchise construction costs lurk behind each build-out, which after the lease is inked, become the responsibility of the unaware tenant.

One of the most important aspects of site evaluation is understanding the physical condition of the tenant space and how it relates to the franchisee use. A "standard" vanilla box condition, negotiated in most leases, may leave the incoming tenant with many required upgrades not known when the lease is signed. These are often facilitated by code requirements, poor condition of existing construction or design requirements brought to the project by the franchisee.

Consider the following brief list of common potential hidden costs:

A. New or reworked fire suppression system.

B. Additional egress requirements.

C. HVAC system modifications.

D. Demising wall fire rating.

E. Electrical service entrance adequacy.

F. ADA modifications.

G. Asbestos or hazardous material abatement.

H. Water or gas service size deficiency.

I. Additional toilet rooms required.

J. Fresh makeup air requirements or exhaust systems.

K. In-wall blocking, sound attenuation insulation needs.

L. Underground plumbing, fixture requirements, drinking fountains, mop sink, floor drains, etc.

M. Floor prep, waterproofing membrane requirements.

N. Health department finish requirements beyond Vanilla Box specifications.

O. Fire alarm systems.

P. Required use of Landlord's roofing contractor for warranty.

Q. Adequacy of storefront construction, location of doors, glass areas, energy efficiency, etc.

R. Location of landlord provided work not compatible with plans.

S. Adequacy of site to stage construction, parking, dumpsters, deliveries, etc.

T. Excessive building permit fees, bonds, insurance costs.

U. Stringent landlord required construction site policies and procedures.

V. Union labor requirements or landlord contractor use requirements.

W. Tap fees for utility connections.

X. Hidden or unforeseen conditions in walls or under floor slab.

Y. Complexity of demolition activities - removal of debris from jobsite.

Z. Additional emergency / exit lights required by building department.

The list stretches from A to Z. The best advice is to know the physical attributes of the space you are leasing. It may have a profound effect on your decision when you are considering various locations. Combining various expertise at the outset can be very beneficial: a general contractor for demised space review, a financial planner for business plan review, a real estate agent for site review and a real estate attorney for lease review. Directing a bright light at these hidden issues before you commit can make all the difference.

Types of Wine Cabinets

Many people enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or for entertaining while other people are serious wine collectors or connoisseurs. Regardless, whether keeping one or two bottles of wine on hand or multiple bottles, a wine cabinet is needed to store the wine properly. Because of this, you will find a number of different styles, perfect to match the style or décor of your room. In this article, we will provide you with some of the more popular options to help get you started.

Just as with other types of kitchen and dining room furniture, wine cabinets are available in many different colors, materials, styles, sizes, and price ranges, making it possible for anyone who enjoys wine to store it the right way. Wine cabinets will ensure the bottles lay on their side, which keeps the cork moist and easy to open. In addition, wine cabinets protect the wine bottles from damage or breakage.

o Traditional - Many of the traditional wine cabinets are made from mahogany or cherry and in the Queen Anne style. This style includes some ornate detailing, traditional style hardware, carved legs, and depending on the style chosen, the cabinet may or may not have a door front.

o Spanish - Spanish style wine cabinets are simplistic yet attractive. Many of these cabinets will have a door front with open shelving below for added storage or display. The Spanish style wine cabinet comes in a number of sizes (up to 21 bottle capacity), and features utility drawers with beautiful pulls. You will even find this style offering a place behind the doors to hang wine glasses, making it convenient and functional.

o Transitional - For this style of wine cabinet, wood is usually walnut, pine, or oak. With a place for hanging stemware above, a nice tabletop for corking and serving, and plenty of storage below for wine, this is a favorite for any style kitchen or dining room.

o Contemporary - Although you will find a number of styles that fit in with modern décor, many of these wine cabinets are constructed from wrought iron or some other type of metal coupled with glass and marble. One popular choice features an arched top, glass shelving, area for storing the wine bottles, and a locking door that allows you to peer in while keeping the wine protected.

With prices of wine cabinets ranging from $150 to thousands of dollars, you have a wide range of choices. By using an actual cabinet for your wine, not only will it keep better and thereby taste better but the various bottles can be beautifully displayed. Remember, wine cabinets come in numerous sizes so wine can be stored on top of a buffet or sideboard, or in an actual cabinet as a stand-alone piece of furniture.

What's in?

Jewel cases have been in use from a long time and are one of the affordable choices for CDs and DVDs. They protect your discs from scratches and from falls. Slimline cases are similar but thinner. One of the cheapest and greenest choices you can make are paper sleeves. They are recyclable but wont protect your CDs from falls and aren't waterproof. Cardboard and crystal boxes are also widely sold these days.

Multiple disc holders

Cases that hold multiple CDs are also available which can be a little more expensive but are used when the discs are considered a set.4 way multi CD holder as well as 6 way CD holder with trays are available which are designed for easy use. DVD boxes that hold one or more DVDs come with traditional, push up as well as two- way spiders. DVD jewel trays as well as jewel boxes protect the DVDs well from scratches and falls.

Cover designs

If you have a tight budget, you can go for the paper sleeve or the PVC sleeve which offer protection against scratches. If you want more protection you can go for the cases and boxes.

Banner Ads, Do You Know What They Are?

There are a lot of ways to make money on the Internet these days. Having your own website is one of them and an ideal method of getting your information in one centralized place so that consumers can find it. However, there is no use for anyone to have a website if no one can find it. That is the reason if any business is to be successful they have to advertise.

If you have not heard about Banner ads or advertising mediums like that, you are certainly going to start hearing about how popular advertising this way has become. Many advertising companies grow rapidly with the internet taking them on the next big journey, and all of them are in the business of promoting businesses over the web.

Advertisers pay to promote their businesses, and there are certainly lots of companies that do that. So what should you be looking for? Ideally, you should be looking for one that will guarantee results.

Banner ads on the Internet all deal in advertising, but you have to check for yourself if any of the companies offering them will guarantee the success of the ones they create or allow you to use.

The old timers on the Internet use a variety of means for advertising, but newer ones understand that if they are going to be successful and grab their fair share of the business they will have to do things a bit differently. Sure, highly visible sites offer text and banner advertisements, but are they really as productive as you would like them to be? Yes and no. Sometimes it takes a new approach if you are going to be able to pull in the type of traffic you would like.

Banner ads on the Internet deal with advertising through banners as you might expect from the name. You know what banners are don't you? They are an advertising form which is delivered to a website through the server with embedded advertisements in them. They are intended to get the attention of consumers and entice them to click on the ad.

With the wide variety of advertising businesses on the web, it should not be difficult for you to find one that will suit your needs. That means you will want to find one that can prove they are effective and know what they are doing. You want one that is part of the next wave of the future, so get out your board and give it a good waxing to be ready for the next wave.

The Secrets to Grilling

All of you who feel like they've mastered the art of grilling, there is no need to read any further. But for the rest of you, mere admirers of Gordon Ramsay and other celebrity chefs - I strongly advise you to keep reading because I am about to share with you the secrets to grilling the right way. And every amateur cook has to know at least the basics of grilling - otherwise all that meat will go to waste. Well, not to waste as long as you don't burn it but you can't really reveal the full potential of the protein if you lack the necessary skills and technique. Without further ado, let us dive right into the delicious world of cooking!

I will share with you plenty of useful tips but if I was limited to only giving you one advice then I'd tell you this: practice! The right way to grill is what really works best for you, and the only way to completely master grilling is to practice a lot. What is the key difference between a professional chef and a home cook? Chefs spend a good eight hours on their feet preparing one dish after another, while a home cook prepares meals one or two times per day. If mastering cooking techniques is one of your priorities then you have to be prepared to fail a few times and even possibly throw out some fine cuts of meat. Eventually, you will feel more comfortable experimenting and you'll reach a point when you know exactly what is going on in front of you. Practice really does make perfect!

By getting into the more technical details, I'd like to point out that there is a difference between grilling and barbecuing. People often think that they are both the same thing but the difference is huge. While traditional barbecue relies on a lot of smoke and low cooking temperature, grilling depends on a higher temperature in order to sear what you are cooking and preserving the juices.

Grilling is similar to broiling. Both methods use direct heat but the main difference is that broiling uses heat coming from above, while in grilling the heat comes from below. Both methods are suitable for cooking tender cuts of fish, chicken, and beef. When it comes to cutting meat, there are hundreds if not thousands of ways to do it but you have to be sure that you're not cooking a piece that is too thick. If you do, the exterior will be overcooked by the time the middle is done. One of the good sides of grilling is that it is a relatively healthy way of preparing meat since most of the fat will drip into the fire but you have to be careful and avoid flare-ups from fat - there is a chance to burn what you're cooking.

By now, you are probably asking yourself what is the best fuel source for grilling. A lot of people use charcoal and make the common mistake of not using enough at the start or adding more when it burns down. As a result, they get food that wasn't seared properly so it overcooks. And what do I mean by overcooking? As soon as you lose the juices, you're done - game over. If the meat is dry then you know you've failed. Using self-starting charcoal briquettes can give food an awful chemical taste - use them as a last resort. You can buy real lump charcoal without any additives - the difference is from here to the moon.

Cleaning your grill is also very important. You always have to start with perfectly clean grill. Can you imagine cooking a fine cut of salmon on a grill that hasn't been cleaned for two or three sessions? If cleaning is a nuisance to you, then you can order grill cleaning for your home. If you think you can live through one grill cleaning then remember to remove all food residue with a wire brush while the grate is still hot at the end of the cooking session. It is clever to always spray some vegetable oil on the grill in order to avoid sticking.

Now, let's start cooking. It is vital to have your grill on the right temperature before you start cooking. Many home cooks, especially those using gas grills, wait until right before they start cooking but this is a common mistake. The grill has to be preheated 15 to 30 minutes before the first cut of meats "steps on the dance floor". Have all your cooking tools on standby including sauces and seasoning. It is always useful to have a spray bottle with water for accidental flare-ups. Also, you have to be very familiar with your grill. Knowing where the hot and cooler spots are can sometimes make or break your performance.

The preparation of ingredients is something you're probably familiar with but we can't really skip it. If you're cooking a steak it is best to remove most of the excess fat and season with some salt before you start. With fish, I prefer to place it in a zip lock bag with some olive oil and herbs. In most cases, you'd want to precook chicken in the oven to lessen cooking time which will give you control over browning. No matter what ingredients you're cooking with, always bring them to room temperature before you start! This is a law!

Marinades can make a huge difference in adding taste. Personally, I never cook without marinade. There thousands of recipes for marinades so you better check your cookbooks and find out what sounds tasty to you. Just remember to pat dry the meat when cooking with marinade in order to avoid flare-ups. Barbecue sauces are often used in grilling and people often prefer the commercial products but it is best to always cook with fresh ingredients. The most basic barbecue sauce includes tomatoes, onion, vinegar, mustard, and brown sugar. You can create your own versions of this by adding ingredients. Personally, I love using red wine instead of vinegar.

The most frequent question when it comes to grilling is "how often you cook the meat?" and I will address this as well. So, how can I tell when my meat is done? You will find thousands of guides but it comes down to experience. Follow the guides in your cookbooks, but always touch the meat at difference intervals so you can become familiar with texture and firmness. Master cooks are often able to determine the condition of a cut just by seeing its colour and touching it. Cool, huh?

This is only the just of grilling and there is a lot more to learn, but if you are a newbie you can't get any better if you don't roll up your sleeves and light up the grill. Grilling is always a good alternative to cooking indoors during the summer. With time and a lot of practice you will surely master this cooking method.

Most Effective Forms of Cross Training for Surfers

Surfing is one of the most physically demanding sports there is today. Mainly because it's ride or die out there; shred or get shredded. The waves don't stop for you, which means that you don't stop. This type of physical fitness requires a great deal of endurance, strength, agility, and balance. One of the best ways to become a stronger surfer in all areas is surfing itself. However, not all surfers live right by the ocean, or have the opportunity to go out for a session whenever they want. Also, if you are truly out of shape and lacking in any of these crucial aspects of fitness, the ocean is probably not the safest place for you right now. Fortunately, there are numerous forms of cross training that can drastically improve your surfing performance and experience as a whole. The most effective forms of cross training for surfing specifically are those that work the same muscle groups, have similar movements, and give you the feel or the flow that surfing has, also known as functional training. The focus of functional training is on exercises that involve or mimic the movements you would make while surfing. Let me introduce you or refresh you on some forms of cross training that will get your strength, endurance, agility, balance, and much more up to par.

Swimming is an excellent form of functional training especially if it's in the ocean - that way you really get the same feel and become more acquainted and knowledgeable about your playing field. Swimming is probably the most obvious way to increase your paddle power (just like surfing improves your surfing), plus it works multiple muscle groups simultaneously- just as surfing does, and the same ones you use while surfing. At the same time that you are swimming and gaining strength in all of the necessary areas, you are improving your cardiovascular fitness as well, which helps to build your endurance. Swimming, or paddling to be more exact, is what you are doing about 90 percent of the time you are surfing. Therefore, it's worth it to practice and become better and necessary if you want to become a better surfer.

Running is a very common form of cross training for many sports. It can be extremely effective in advancing your surf performance as long as you are careful, after all, running is one of the most injury prone sports there is. That's why it is best to run either on sand (wet sand, or dry for more of a challenge), grass, or trail for less of an impact on your joints. Places that are most commonly available for most people to run on are a mixture of grass and concrete, so it's important that you have a good pair of running shoes for protection and support. The greatest thing about running is that you can manipulate the flow into a more functional training. What I mean is that when you are running, you don't have to limit yourself to any there and back, boring routes. Running a set, decided on distance is good, but to really put running in gear for your fitness advancement and surfing improvement specifically, interval running is the most functional and effective. Interval running has you run through a set of time intervals where you run hard and easy on and off; for instance, 20 seconds fast, followed by 40 seconds of less intense or easy running, for a total of 20 minutes. This quick and constant switch of low intensity to high intensity is what makes interval running such a functional form of training for surfers, because when you're surfing you constantly have to switch from a low intensity (waiting for a wave) to a high intensity (catching the wave). Interval running increases your agility by getting your body used to this strong and sudden shift making it faster and more fluid. It also builds your strength and stamina.

If you've never taken a yoga class, it's time to get on that! Yoga is becoming more and more popular among surfers today and it is clear as to why. Yoga not only helps to increase your flexibility, strength, balance and endurance but it also develops mental stamina which are all very crucial for surfing. What's more is that it develops a sense of calmness and patience- you're going to need this definitely for surfing but also at all times for life in general! And if that isn't beneficial enough, hang tight. Yoga gives you improved posture, breathing, and also minimizes your risk of injury. It also is extremely effective in clearing out toxins and helps a lot with blood circulation, bringing necessary oxygen and nutrients to places that normally don't get enough. It is one of the most complete and balanced forms of exercise there is because you're stretching, strengthening, balancing, and meditating all at the same time. There are many different types of yoga but all of them will leave your mind, body, and spirit feeling completely cleansed and refreshed. And the benefits it will bring to your surfing experience make it all the more worth your time and effort.

Finally, we have functional training! Like I stated earlier, the focus of functional training is on exercises that involve or mimic the movements you would make while out in the surf. By focusing so specifically on these surf-like movements and exercises, doing them repetitively and regularly, your body will develop muscle memory. This means that when you get out in the water and have to paddle through a massive set it, or if you are suddenly forcing your way into a wave, it will be a breeze since you have been doing these same movements every day. Your surfing ability and overall fitness will be heightened immensely. Mostly all forms of exercise need some kind of equipment, whether it is a certain type of shoes or clothing, a specific place like a field or a pool, or a hoop or a goal. For functional training, all you will need is a stability ball, a set of dumbbells, and a resistance band to give you an intense, multi-targeted workout that you can do at home, at the gym, or where ever suits your mood. Functional training uses running, swimming, strategic exercise and stretching sequences to improve your total fitness spectrum: agility, flexibility, strength, endurance, and balance. Functional training is the best-rounded form of exercise there is, especially for surfing, and has the potential to get you to live up to yours.

Childhood Obesity, On the Rise

Along with the increase of obesity in adult, childhood obesity is on the rise. Around 15.5 percent of adolescents in the United States, aged 12 to 19 are obese. Even more alarming, about 15.3 percent of children ages 6 to 11 are obese. These children are developing Type II Diabetes and high blood pressure at an early age. They are placing themselves at increased risk for heart disease and other obesity-related diseases. Their weight also makes them the target of bullies and children who insult and taunt them about their weight. This can ruin their self-esteem and put them at risk for depression.

Today's children make up the digital generation. They've been surrounded by computers their entire life and are not as physically active as children of past generations were. Instead of going outside and playing, they tend to hang out indoors, watching TV and playing computer and video games. Along with lack of physical activity comes the convenience of fast food. There are fast food restaurants virtually around every corner, and they have easy access to snack foods full of saturated fats and sugars. In addition, obese parents are more likely to have obese children. The reason for this is two-fold. First, obese parents probably pass down their poor habits to their children. Second, genetics plays a role in obesity.

It's important for parents to be role models to their children and emphasize the importance of physical activity and healthy eating. Parents can create healthy environments for their children by doing regular physical activities, such as biking, swimming, or walking together. They should encourage their children to participate in sports, dance, martial arts, and etcetera. This allows children to develop an appreciation of physical activity and enjoy exercising.

When it comes to eating, parents need to implement diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains. They can make eating enjoyable and healthy by preparing food together and eating together as a family. Fast-food should be limited and reserved for special occasions. Way too often, we reward ourselves for a job well done with food. Look for other ways to reward your children for doing a great job, such as a special shopping trip or a day with just mom or dad.

Information Sells - Believe It

That's right, Information sells. Write it down. It certainly took me a while, but the penny finally dropped. I was buying book after book, product after product.

Signing up for this that and the other, but it was all bull. Well most of it was anyway. They all pretty much told you the same thing, but what amazed me was that these guys in the internet world were running sustainable businesses from selling it.

They were multi millionaires. This was all from selling information.

Yes they exaggerated the truth, they fed off what the great business guru Rich Schefren describes as an 'opportunity seeker'.

The opportunity seekers were always waiting for the next get rich scheme. Credit Cards ready to fire like a gunslinger in the Wild West.

I'd established now that I was good at something online.

I was king of the opportunity seeker's or at least one of them. I couldn't be the only one? I was buying instead of selling. How could I possibly make any money, ever?!

After reading my 1,000,000th business book, I learnt the psyche of the opportunity seeker, their behavioural patterns and urge to keep buying. I was reading about myself...

I learnt that an opportunity seeker has the right mindset and is confident of making his business work. But they get caught in a whirlwind of the next big opportunity and never complete the last thing they were working on.

They never move forward and get caught in a cycle.

They have the knowledge but not the patience to see their work out. They constantly fear failure and they think they are getting further and further away from making their fortune online. That's why they look for the big and quick fix every time. That's what these 'big online guru's' feed on.

Because they are not seeing the overnight riches the gurus promise them after paying $2,000 for an online course. The opportunity seeker reverts back to seeking opportunities of another get rich scheme and the cycle starts again.

You must not fall into this trap. If you take anything away from this book, it's that you cannot under any circumstances fall into this trap of opportunity seeking because you will get nowhere and your business will end up hitting a brick wall.

You will go round in circles buying products instead of creating and growing a business yourself.

After years of seeking the next big thing I learnt that there was one defining thing between the successful online and the unsuccessful. Just one, tiny little secret you need to get you on the right track.

Also, such groups often put a very unique tracking IDs into these email links, so that they come to know who exactly clicked on that link, which makes all these groups worth more money to all other spammers.

Are You The Victim of a Surgical Mesh Injury?

With the many advancements in modern medicine, there have been a number of breakthroughs in the world of gynecology and women's health. Conditions that once plagued women for years with no relief can now be remedied in fairly easy ways, allowing women to live healthy, active, normal lives without certain worries. Today, thousands of women all across the United States turn to their doctors to help them with a number of issues and concerns. They put a great deal of faith and trust into their doctors and the products and procedures that are recommended. In turn, doctors and medical professionals place a great deal of trust in the hands of the manufacturers who make the products recommended to patients.

One product that showed a great deal of promise for helping women suffering with female stress urinary incontinence was vaginal mesh. This product is also known as obtape, or a vaginal sling, and was just the item to help thousands of women in need. Unfortunately, while many doctors believed in and trusted the claims of this product, it did not live up to its promises and many women experienced terrible side effects that could have and should have been avoided. In these cases, the manufacturer of the product was negligent due to creating a defective product and can be held liable for injuries that were a result of using the mesh.

For the three year period ranging from 2003 to 2006 more than thirty five thousand women sought treatment for the condition of female stress urinary incontinence by having vaginal mesh implanted. This mesh was created to help support the pelvic muscles at the urethra and bladder that have weakened, in order to help stop the involuntary leakage. Because of a defect in the design, the mesh ended up being manufactured with a non-woven material that prevented oxygen and nutrients from being able to flow through, which in turn led to serious complications. These complications cropped up in the treated women months or years following the procedure. In October of 2006, the Journal of Urology published a study that found more than thirteen percent of women who received the mesh implants to help with their incontinence issues suffered vaginal extrusions. There were also several cases of women receiving the mesh implants that experienced abscesses and chronic vaginal discharge. After this study was released, a number of doctors and medical facilities ceased using the mesh.

The FDA issued a letter to healthcare providers in October of 2008 that reported more than one thousand reports of adverse reactions from surgical mesh manufacturers over the course of the previous three years. These complications were reported from mesh that was implanted transvaginally in order to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI), and pelvic organ prolapsed (POP). The complications that were the most frequently reported included: infection, recurrence of incontinence and/or prolapsed, erosion of the mesh, erosion through the vaginal epithelium, pain and discomfort that can be severe, urinary problems, vaginal scarring, and perforation of the bladder, blood vessels, or bowel during insertion.

These serious complications require prompt medical treatment in order to repair the damage that has been done, and help to prevent further damage from occurring. Common treatments include draining of abscesses, blood transfusions, further surgeries to remove the implanted mesh, and IV therapy. It is not known if certain patients are more at risk for complications than others, but there are a number of factors that can contribute to extrusion and erosion of the implant. These factors include the material of the mesh that is used, incompatibility, bacterial infection, the placement of the mesh, and attachment of the mesh to a moveable structure. Implants that are made out of excessively woven material or solid material have a higher rate of complications than proper mesh devices. This is because the material is not porous enough to allow the capillaries and tissues to grow through in order for the body to fully incorporate them.

The FDA has issued warnings to doctors to be on the lookout for the potential for adverse reactions and to provide patients with the information necessary to educate them as to the chance of serious side effects and complications. These complications can drastically impact the quality of life for patients and symptoms can include: pelvic pain, high fever, chronic infections, vaginal pain, pain that can be severe in the hips, legs, and back, perineal cellulitis, and pain during intercourse.

If you or someone you know has experienced side effects or complications because of a vaginal mesh surgery, it is important that you seek prompt medical attention in order to have the damage minimized. Once you have had your medical needs addressed, you should contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible to help protect your legal rights.

Medical device manufacturers owe consumers a certain duty of care to provide products that are safe and effective and will not cause harm. When this duty is breached, it is important to hold the manufacturer accountable so that they not only pay for your injuries and expenses, but also so that other innocent people do not fall victim to the same consequences.

When bringing forth a law suit against a product manufacturer, you should not attempt to file on your own. These cases can be quite complex and hinge on many small details. Missing just one detail or not complying with a statute of limitation can cost you your chance at obtaining compensation for your injuries.

A personal injury attorney who specializes in the area of product liability and/or defective products knows the in and outs of the law and will handle every aspect of your case. From collecting medical records, interviewing professionals, and dealing with the legal representatives for the manufacturer, you can rest assured your case is being handled with the utmost care. Since most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency basis, you do not have to worry about funding your claim upfront. This means you have nothing to lose, but so much to gain.

November Is National Adoption Awareness Month

Although for some November is just another month of waiting, longing to have such a family to enjoy the holidays with, as well as have a family 365 days a year. They are an estimated 800,000 plus children in the United States in foster care waiting to be adopted, waiting to be a part of a family who will love and care for them.

This may be the ideal situation one would think with the number of children in foster care, there would be people rushing to adoption agency's to adopt a child into their family. Not all foster children are as blessed to find a loving home who treats them as a part of the family and not make them feel as the outsider of the family. Frankly speaking 3 out of 10 children in America are very fortunate to find the "ideal" loving family, then there's the sad other numbers in the equation of those who are adopted by families who abuse them, mistreat, and sometimes cause fatal harm to them.

There are many wrongful reasons to consider adopting a child for example being selfish, such as the mere thought of being able to have a conversation with a colleague or other family members, sharing you have adopted a child into your family (not wanting to give the child the love they deserve), considering adopting a child to supplement income by becoming a foster parent. Foster children as with all children deserve a loving home, a home where they are not considered a "meat market" for someone to gain financially from them.

Every child that enters the foster care system wants to know someone not only cares about them but loves them as much as their own biological children. Children don't enter the foster care system by choice, so it is important for adults who consider adoption to see them in this way. It's not the child's fault they end up where they are in the system it's up to one loving person after another to make a difference in a child's life forever.

November is National Adoption Awareness Month, if you are unable to adopt a child at this time or in the near future, find an organization that donates to the Foster Care Children Foundation and make a donation, or if you know someone who would make an excellent foster parent share the awareness of how important one adoption can change a child/children lives forever.

Effective Parent Advocacy Skills

Possessing effective parent advocacy skills is not something that comes naturally to many parents of children with special needs. However, I believe learning and refining these skills is essential for the long-term success of most children with special needs. Do not be fooled into thinking that just because you live in a "good" school district that your child is getting a quality education. Based on how the current educational system works (or doesn't work) you must be an active participant in your child's education if you want them to possess the necessary skills to function in society after they graduate from high school or age out of special education at 21.

One very important advocacy skill to constantly work on developing is building positive working relationships with your child's teacher(s) and case managers. The best way to do this is to establish regular communication with your child's service providers, to show up to IEP meetings and conferences and to share your successes and failures as home. Children with special needs really need a team that works together to make steady progress.

Another very important advocacy skill is to know and understand your parental rights, also called procedural safeguards. These rights are spelled out in The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and each state has them listed on their department of education website. The difficulty with these rights is that they are written in legal language, which is often hard to understand and interpret. I urge you to take the time to read the packet that should be given to you when you sign consent for your child to be evaluated for special education and every year, thereafter. If you do not understand any of your rights, either ask the case manager to explain it to you or go on-line to learn what it means.

Another very important advocacy skill to possess is the ability to stay calm and cool at meetings, over the phone and through e-mail communication even when you are angry or upset. Many people do not respond well to angry people, especially when it is directed at them. Take your time to gather your thoughts and get your emotions under control before addressing issues with your child's education, IEP or the IEP process. You are much more likely to get to a resolution that will benefit your child if you keep yourself rationale and calm than if you are explosive, accusing and/or disrespectful.

What's The Best Fuel for Your Charcoal Grill?

Every barbecue enthusiast has an opinion about the best fuel to use on a charcoal grill. If you've not thought much about your fuel options, you should, because the fuel you use can make a big difference to the quality of your barbecued meals.

The three fuel options are charcoal, briquettes and wood.

In this article we'll look at each of these in turn and then make some suggestions about the best ways to use each of them on your charcoal grill.

Charcoal

Mankind has been making charcoal for thousands of years, and probably been using it for cooking for almost as long.

Charcoal is made by burning wood in an atmosphere starved of oxygen, and while it's burning, water and other volatile components in the wood are vaporized. The charcoal produced is used as a fuel instead of wood. It's good for cooking food over because it burns more consistently than wood and it doesn't impart any particular flavors (good or bad) to the food cooked. Flavors can be produced by adding wood chips to the burning charcoal (we'll discuss this later).

Generally speaking, the best woods for burning on an open fire are also the best ones for producing charcoal. But very often when you buy lump charcoal for a BBQ grill you're not told what type of wood was used to make it, but if you do get a choice choose charcoal made from hardwoods such as oak, hickory or mesquite.

Avoid the inferior charcoal produced from timber off-cuts.

Charcoal Briquettes

Charcoal briquettes appeared on the marketplace after Henry Ford spotted an opportunity to use the wood waste produced from car manufacturing to make charcoal briquettes. He did this by making use of a previously patented technique for producing "fuel briquettes". This technique involved a special process for combining and compressing granulated charcoal (produced form his waste wood) with a mixture of borax (used to aid the manufacturing process) and petroleum products (used to bind the wood-chips together and help ignition).

Henry Ford was definitely onto a good thing. He made lots of money selling his briquettes for the nations charcoal grills. Today there are lots of different varieties and brands of briquettes on the marketplace, some of which don't contain the unpleasant-smelling petroleum products. However, even if you can avoid buying briquettes containing petroleum products, it's still best to let them burn for a while on your charcoal grill before you start grilling food to make sure that you get rid of any other substances that might affect the taste and smell of your food.

Lots of people use a Charcoal Grill Chimney Starter to prepare the briquettes for their grills. This method avoids putting burning coals onto your grill until the unpleasant substances in them have burned off. Using a chimney starter you can also replenish your grill with fresh batches of hot briquettes when you are barbecuing for long periods of time.

Wood

Many barbecue veterans prefer to use wood for their barbecue grills. The reason isn't hard to understand. Burning wood gives off natural substances which can impart the most wonderful tastes to food. These substances are lost if the same wood is converted to charcoal.

The really interesting fact about these flavoring substances is that they differ from one type of wood to another. So if you barbecue the same food with hardwoods such as oak, beech and hickory the chances are that you'll notice a very different taste with each variety of wood.

What's the Best Fuel for a Charcoal Grill?

There are advantages and disadvantages for each of the three types of barbecue grill fuel.

Briquettes are extremely popular and widely available. We've pointed out some of their limitations, but one of the big advantages of briquettes is that they're easy to handle and transport, and when they burn they maintain a consistent high temperature (600 degrees F and higher) for long periods. Some types of hardwood Charcoal lumpswill also provide high temperatures, but natural charcoal will frequently not maintain a particular temperature for longer periods.

Wood can reach even higher temperatures than either briquettes or natural charcoal but it's not easy to maintain these temperatures. If it's important to maintain a consistent high temperature with wood you'll probably need to replenish your grill with fresh wood during the cooking period.

One very important point to make is that if you are using wood on your charcoal grill, remember to keep the grill open. If you don't do this your food will end up tasting far too smoky - perhaps even inedible.

Getting the Best Results on Your Charcoal Grill

Wood will give you superb results on a charcoal grill providing you bear in mind the tips and guidance we've provided above. But if you don't want to be involved with the extra effort and skill that's involved if you barbecue with wood you can compensate for the lost flavors by burning wood chips with your briquettes or charcoal lumps.

If you want to use wood chips soak them thoroughly in water first and then scatter them on the glowing coals before and (if necessary) during cooking. They will smolder and eventually burn up, but whilst they are doing this they will introduce the magic flavors into your cooking which you won't get by burning charcoal or briquettes on their own.

The big benefit of adopting this approach to barbecuing is that you can experiment with a wide variety of different types of wood chip to produce varied and interesting flavors into your barbecue food.

Here's a list of the different types of wood chip and the foods they are reckoned to go well with:

· Oak chips are good for all types of barbecue food, especially beef and lamb

· Pecan & Hickory produce a rich, dense smoke which is reckoned to be good for pork

· Mesquite is excellent for beef

· Maple produces a much milder smoke which is good for poultry, seafood and pork

· Alder produces a light flavor particularly suited to salmon, turkey and chicken

· Apple produces a very tangy smoke. It's good for chicken pork and game

· Cherry produces a sweet and tangy smoke and is good for salmon and duck.

There are lots more different types of wood chips. If you want to experiment with a few types purchase several small size bags of chips from your local BBQ Shop or from a good online store like Amazon.
